Overview

Dr. George Grammatopoulos (MBBS, BSc (Hons), DPhil (Oxon), FRCS (Tr & Orth)) is an Ottawa-based orthopaedic surgeon and internationally recognised hip and knee specialist. He serves as Staff Orthopaedic Surgeon, Fellowship Director for Arthroplasty, and Director of Research and Innovation for Orthopaedics at The Ottawa Hospital, and as Associate Professor with the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine.

He completed his surgical training and DPhil (PhD) at the University of Oxford, followed by Fellowships in Arthroplasty and Young Adult Hip at Oxford and The Ottawa Hospital (University of Ottawa). It was during this time that he cultivated his interest in hip morphology and kinematics — and how to incorporate individual anatomy and movement patterns into surgical planning for young adult hip disease, hip replacement, and complex primary and revision hip arthroplasty.

Dr. Grammatopoulos has practised orthopaedic surgery in both England and Canada. He has been awarded three prestigious Travelling Fellowships — the Hip Society Rothman-Ranawat, the British Hip Society, and the EFORT-BJJ — enabling him to collaborate with surgeons and academic centres across North America and Europe. His work in young adult hip pathology and arthroplasty has earned him numerous national and international awards for clinical innovation and research excellence.

In 2024 he was awarded the J. Édouard Samson Award from the Canadian Orthopedic Foundation — recognising the best orthopaedic research in Canada over the preceding five or more years — highlighting Dr. Grammatopoulos as one of Canada's leading clinician scientists in hip surgery. He has received lifetime research funding totalling $2,259,757, with $1,170,836 as Principal Investigator, from agencies including CIHR, Canadian Arthritis Society, Canadian Blood Services, PSI Foundation, TOHAMO, and industry partners Stryker, Zimmer Biomet, and Formus Labs.

Rewarding his commitment to professional development, he was selected for and completed the COA Emerging Leaders Program (Class of 2024). His highly specialised practice is focused on young adult hip pathology, offering a full spectrum from preservation procedures to complex arthroplasty for patients across Ottawa, Eastern Ontario, and Canada.
